"...on the last glorious stretch of highway snaking through the Coast Mountains along the great Skeena River, not a cloud blurred the brilliant blue sky. I was spellbound by every new vista that rose up after every curve in the highway. When I arrived in Prince Rupert at 8 p.m., sunlight bathed the city, which glistened in the clean, washed air...Only in Prince Rupert could a sunny day be this golden, this magical." Brian McGill, Beautiful British Columbia Magazine
Great highways, a labyrinth of secondary and forest roads, and two ferry systems await those looking for the ultimate road trip. You will find awe-inspiring scenery and friendly people. Bring your camera, fishing gear, hiking boots and sense of adventure, for it truly doesn't get any better than this.
Fifteen minutes from Prince Rupert you'll find Port Edward - home to North Pacific Historic Fishing Village. The community has a number of services, including a campground, boat launch, moorage and marina facilities. The 140 km drive between Prince Rupert and Terrace carries a five-star rating in the Michelin Guide. The road follows the Skeena River as the Coast Mountains rise straight up on the other side. Frequent rest areas allow you to stop and enjoy the scenery.
Surrounded by mountains, Terrace is located on the Skeena River. The Tsimshian communities of Kitsumkalum and Kitselas border the city. Terrace has a number of attractions; however, its premier feature is the out-of-doors. Fishing, camping and hiking are just minutes from town. It is also the gateway to the Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park and the community of Gitlakdamix (New Aiyansh).
South of Terrace is Kitimat, the jumping off spot to the Douglas Channel and great kayaking, sportfishing and cruising.
East of Terrace, watch for the summits of the Seven Sisters, visible shortly before you reach the junction with Highway 27 at Gitwangak/Kitwanga.
At the junction, head north up the paved Cassiar Highway (Highway 37) to Stewart, BC and Hyder, Alaska. For more adventure, you can access Highway 37 via the Nisga'a Highway in Terrace. Best known for glaciers and bears, Stewart/Hyder is well worth a visit.
Your excursion into Nisga'a territory will take you to the Nass Valley. This is the place of Canada's most recent volcanic eruption, which occurred some 300 years ago. Stop at the interpretive centre and catch a tour with Nisga'a guides who offer guided tours of the lava beds.
A series of Gitksan and Wet'suwet'en communities cluster with the pioneer settlements of New, South and Old Hazelton, in what is collectively referred to as "the Hazeltons".
If you like the open road, for the day or as part of a longer cruise, you're in for one of North America's greatest drives.
