Independent Exploration
For those visitors wishing to spend a day simply exploring our community, there are many opportunities for independent exploration. The community is easily accessible on foot, and many visitors embark on walking tours of the city, exploring the various districts and taking advantage of our excellent recreation facilities.

Many begin their day with a visit to our Cultural District, although there are endless possibilities. The Historic Downtown and Cow Bay shopping districts both offer many shops, galleries, restaurants and cafes. Visitors will see several totem poles, and there are many other hints of our rich history in the architecture and monuments that can be found throughout the community.

The Sunken Garden project is a testament to the strong community spirit that exists in Prince Rupert, and residents and visitors alike enjoy spending some quiet time in the beautiful surroundings.  Located close by are the Pacific Mariner’s Memorial Park and the Prince Rupert Waterfront Park. Other parks can be found throughout the city.

A modern skateboard park is always a favorite, and there is also a swimming pool, and recreation facility, that are open to the public. Prince Rupert is also home to a beautiful 18-hole golf course that can be enjoyed nearly year round.

There are a number of well-groomed hiking trails within the city and visitors are often surprised to find that they are able to experience the rainforest without even leaving the city limits! If you’d like to venture a little further out, there are many parks and lakes where you can enjoy your day.  Many make a stop at the Butze Rapids Trail to view the unique reversing tidal rapids.

However you chose to spend your day, you will be sure to delight in Prince Rupert’s natural wilderness setting surrounded by mountains and ocean, where deer wander the streets, and eagles fly overhead.
